A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A CNC MACHINIST

As a CNC Machinist, you arrive for your weekend shift ready to ensure that our machined parts are made accurately and carefully. Your role in the manufacturing process begins when you set-up mills and lathes by first checking the iPad. You set tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches. Using your great mathematical mind, you calculate the requirements necessary to create a high-quality product. By installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers, you ensure that your machine is ready to go.

While operating the CNC machine, you maintain specifications by closely observing drilling, grooving, milling, and cutting. When issues arise, you are able to easily detect malfunctions and troubleshoot, adjust, and reprogram the controls. With safety and quality in mind, you keep your machine clean and well maintained by sharpening and replacing worn tools. At the end of each shift, you maintain continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs. You love this profession and feel productive as you play a part in the manufacturing of important and useful items.  Many times you can later see how the parts you manufactured play a role a piece of ground support equipment.
